卅二8～9

　　至高者將地業賜給列邦，將世人分開，就照以色列的數目，立定萬民的疆界　這裏的至高者，是古代上帝的名稱，在以色列人進佔迦南前就有的（見創十四18～22；民廿四16）。

要了解這節話，就必須明白創十章的含義。在該章，記述人類分散全地共有七十族人，並按他們的方言、宗族而立國。

以色列的數目，按七十士譯本，是「神的數目」。這原是烏加列文獻所記，在至高者的天庭裏，有七十位使者，即神的眾子（參看創六2、4；伯一6；詩八十二1，八十九6等）。至高者分配每一族人均有一位使者，作為他們的庇護者──護佑的天使。

可是，上主並未派使者護佑以色列人，乃揀選他們在祂自己的名下直接給予護庇，這就是第9節耶和華的分本是他的百姓，他的產業本是雅各的意義。

　　一般學者都同意：七十士譯本所依據的，是較古遠的抄本。現有希伯來文的五經，是主前第三世紀末七十士譯本之後的抄本。在主後一三五年的希伯來文定本聖經規定以前，抄本的抄繕者按己意或其所屬團體的神學立場而刪改聖經的事，是常有的現象。這裏的以色列的數目就是一例。猶太教不想使人誤解他們接受多神的思想，因此將原來「神（複數式）的數目」，改為「以色列的數目」。按照拉比的解釋，這「以色列的數目」，乃是「七十長老」的數目（參看出廿四1、9；民十一16、24等）。
