在騷動不安的夢境之中，我在窄窄的鵝卵石街道上踽踽獨行，在路燈光暈的籠罩下，當我的眼被那撕裂了夜色的霓虹燈刺穿，我豎起衣領抵禦嚴寒和潮濕，觸摸著沉默的聲音。

And in the naked light I saw ten thousand people, maybe more, people talking without speaking, people hearing without listening, people writing songs that voices never share and no one dared disturb the sound of silence.

在那刺目的燈光下，我看到數以萬計的人們，人們說而不言，聽而不聞，人們寫著聲音不敢傳唱的歌曲，因為沒有人敢打擾這沉默的聲音。

"Fools" said I, "You do not know silence's like a cancer grows. Hear my words that I might teach you, take my arms that I might reach you." But my words like silent raindrops fell echoed in the wells of silence.

"傻子" 我說，"你有所不知，沉默滋長有如頑疾。聽我的話語，讓我教導你；抓著我的手臂，讓我找到你。"

And the people bowed and prayed to the neon god they made.
And the sign flashed out its warning in the words that it was forming.
And the sign said, "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls and tenement halls."
And whispered in the sounds of silence.

人們向他們所造的霓虹神像躬身禱告，(霓虹燈)用他的話語，在沉默的聲音之中閃爍著神蹟，低語著，"我已將所有的預言，諭示在地鐵的牆上和廉價公寓的大廳裡了。"

沉默是一種聲音。

在這首歌裡面，Pual Simon 運用了大量的比喻使得整首歌的意象十分豐富有如親見。

然而可以發現的是，民歌詩人保羅賽門的歌詞並不容易讀懂，因為運用了大量的修辭技巧 ( 雖然不是最最機車的那種)。這首歌的歌詞其實每一個段落都只是一個句子，但是因為每一個句子都是複合句，因此需要具備一些文法技巧才能真正讀懂。

整首歌詞最難懂的部分大概是最後一段中，諷刺人們膜拜假神的部分。

霓虹燈在這段歌詞之中只是一個象徵性的代表，代表物質生活的繁華和燈紅酒綠。保羅把霓虹燈背後所暗示的繁華生活比喻成人們對於物質生活的崇拜，有如崇拜假神。

Sign 這個字在聖經之中通常用來指"神蹟"，因此這段歌詞諷刺了人們不斷追求物質生活，企圖在其中找到神蹟，然而這個假神所諭示的神蹟，卻是顯現在地鐵牆上的塗鴉和廉價公寓的大廳之中。這段非常諷刺地指出，神蹟從不存在於霓虹燈所代表的物質生活的燈紅酒綠之中，卻只顯示在低下階層在地鐵牆上書寫不滿的塗鴉，和廉價公寓的中下階層生活之中。

Simon & Garfinkel 是六零年代美國民謠搖滾的代表人物之一，他們的歌曲經常反映出人們的關係在高度物質化後的疏離。他們的歌詞書寫極為著力，極具詩意，然卻不失為軟爛。個人認為是英文歌曲歌詞之神之一。(因為還有其他神級的作曲作詞家 ...........)

這首歌詞中使用了大量的排比，對偶，摹寫，誇飾，層遞，雙關，譬喻，借代，飛白，轉化，象徵的手法 (O.S.  喂，你太誇張了，不要把中文修辭課本的手法通通抄上來好咩？.............噗哧，不過仔細分析，你會發現我其實沒有吹牛，哈哈)，實在是值得一背的英文作文範本啊 ~~~~~~~( 被丟拖鞋)

不過這首歌的歌詞是真的很厲害啦，ㄎㄎ ............
